October 2009 - Centre of NGC 253

NGC 253 is one of brightest spiral galaxies in the night sky, easily visible with small telescopes. This Hubble image of part of the galaxy shows that it contains thousands of young blue stars and is undergoing intense star formation. The dark filaments are clouds of dust and gas.
