World’s Astronomers Converge on Venice

Third Science with the Hubble Space Telescope conference opens in Italy

4 October 2010

Astronomers from around the world are gathering for the third Science with the Hubble Space Telescope conference (HST3), which takes place in Venice from 11–14 October. They will be celebrating 20 years of cutting-edge science with the world’s most famous orbiting observatory, and looking forward to new research opportunities in the years to come.

The previous Science with the Hubble Space Telescope conference took place in Paris in 1995. Since then, scientists have made numerous breakthroughs in astronomy and astrophysics with the telescope, including imaging the most distant galaxies in the Universe and probing the atmospheres of exoplanets for the first time.

Talks at the conference will include both retrospectives on Hubble’s rich history and discussions of the research to be pursued in the years ahead. Thanks to the new instruments installed during Servicing Mission 4 in 2009, Hubble’s ability to see and study the cosmos is way beyond what could have been imagined when the telescope was launched, and major new discoveries continue to be made all the time.

Members of the press are welcome to attend, providing they have registered beforehand. Journalists interested in attending should contact Oli Usher (ousher@eso.org). Please note that places are limited.

The third Science with the Hubble Space Telescope conference is dedicated to Robert (Bob) Fosbury who will retire at the end of 2010 as Head of Space Telescope – European Co-ordinating Facility after working 23 years with the European Space Agency.
