Hubble captures Saturn's F-ring

This original is a Hubble image taken at opposition in 2003. The 'sharpened' image is a B&W; layer processed with a high pass filter and blended with Hard Light to avoid the fringes that unsharp masking produces so readily. Here the F ring appeared beyond Saturn's shadow on the rings. The Blue minus green image reveals the braiding and broken F ring. The Green minus red image reveals the scale and complex patterns in the dust surrounding the ring. The colourising is quite arbitrary.
